About Nethermoss Archers

Nethermoss Archers started off as the archery club of the Sports and Social Club of the English Electric Company on Dunnings Bridge Road, Netherton in 1958. The club gets its name, and its club crest, from the Knight of Nether Moss whose grave is found in the grounds of Sefton Church. The church and the adjacent pub, The Punch Bowl, are said to be haunted.

Upon the closure of the English Electric Company, the club moved to Bootle Football ground (next to the Packet Steamer and Copy Lane Police Station). From there it went to Maghull Football Club, then Winifred's Lane in Aughton.

From it's venue in Aughton the club incorporated Aughton Youth Archers whose membership came from the local youth club run by current member Alan Dodson. Unfortunately, the wooden club hut was destroyed by fire and Aughton were unwilling to let us build a more robust replacement.

With grants from the Sport Aid Council and the Ormskirk Round Table, as well as club funds, Nethermoss purchased the building you see today. The Scarisbrick Village Hall Committee granted us permission to place our hut on their playing field, and in return we would support Village Hall activities as much as possible.

Nethermoss Archers is a member of the Grand National Archery Society, the Northern Counties Archery Society, and Lancashire Archery Association.

Despite archery being very much a minority sport in the UK, membership has remained steady. Aughton Youth Archers no longer exists, with junior archers now joining Nethermoss as a junior member. The club boasts past Great Britain team members in the form of Ron Bishop and Tony Hoe (and also one of the founder members of the club, Ces Priestman) is a former Great Britain team manager.  Isla Lillie is a Scottish international.  Matthew Fuller has held a junior national record since 1994. Club Chairman Nigel Kerr has been a regular part of the Lancashire County Team, while David and Michael Herbert represented the county at junior level. Former member Richard Priestman holds two Olympic bronze medals.

This wealth of experience, together with the friendly, high spirited atmosphere within the club, provides an ideal environment for people to take up archery as well as aspiring current archers to greater things.
